Rank. 8. 0Congratulations to Cyberdreams for creating something innovative and putting something in the video game world that wasn. Remember, trust no one and keep your back against the wall. Noir: A Shadowy Thriller is filmmaker Jeff Blyth's one and only attempt at building a game. And, as the score indicates, it was, for the most part, a very successful effort. While one could argue that a more seasoned hand might have polished some of Noir's rougher edges, one could also argue that a more experienced developer might not have possessed either Blyth's enthusiasm for the project or his affection for its material. After all, it was Blyth, and not someone with more imposing game industry credentials, who managed to get the game made. And, better yet, get it made in glorious, crisp black and white. Though Noir is not on par with games like The Longest Journey, it was a unique, and sometimes even surprising game. Sadly, we are currently living in a marketplace where the game with the biggest gun wins. Games that take a risk in presentation like Noir don't get made anymore. Which is too bad considering that, with a little tinkering, this could have been a great game or an excellent jumping off point for a series of games, if it had found an audience. Noir appears to be well researched and has some positive attributes. Unfortunately the interface technology used is about 5- 6 years too old. In my opinion, Cyberdreams could have used a more modern interface and not lost the . Add this to my desire for more interactivity in the gameplay, and you come out with a score of 5. Where the game stops being obvious is in the intertwining of its stories. And who do you think penned the screenplay for the dog- loving movie star's biggest hit? Yes, after you've pounded the pavement for a while, knocked on a lot of doors that remained shut, and gotten thrown out of more joints you can count, the stories begin to come together in a satisfying way. But it's too little too late. The gameplay remains a chore, the writing and acting never rise above the level of a B picture (though the plotting does), and the whole enterprise smells musty as a mothballed fedora. Given the way the game plays, much of the play consists of finding the objects and information which will open a path to find more objects and so on. Yet you won't find it as easy as it sounds. This is primarily because it can be incredibly fiddly to navigate your way around. Your cursor will indicate the direction you can turn from each screen, which can be of varying degrees and up and down, and you mouse click your way about. It all sounds straightforward, but the perspective you get from each turn can be startlingly different to what you anticipated, which can confuse you no end about where you have and haven't been. Fans hoping for a storyline based on traditional Film Noir elements will probably be disappointed as well. The six storylines in the game are ridiculously generic: the Chinese opium ring, the missing heiress, the shady underground mob boss, etc. None of the surprises or cynicism of the genre are present, and the occasional attempts at humor fall flat. The photographs used for scenery are great - exploring historical landmarks like the newly restored Bradbury building and Union Station is a real treat - but after wandering up and down the numerous hallways, trying to figure out a way to access the stairway you've been circling is just simply no fun. Overall, Cyberdreams has produced a home run in terms of creating a very immersive and believable 1. Los Angeles. The photo- realistic graphics, great period music and SFX really create the illusion of . But in my opinion, the game play was a strikeout. Darn it! 4. 0The game also lacks the cynicism and feeling of impending doom that's so prevalent in the genre. The denouement is weak for a game in this style, with no scandals exposed, people ruined or feelings that you're helpless to confront the machinations of big business, government, or whatever (film noir was most popular during the cold war, when fear and paranoia was rampant). In general, film noir is a genre rich with gaming possibilities, but the game Noir chooses not to use a lot of what makes it so interesting. By taking the character out of noir, they've taken the character out of Noir. Einen gewissen d. Wer auch nur ein wenig auf die Kulisse im Nachkriegsstil steht, wird sich anfang brav durch riesige Treppenh. Auf Dauer langweilen die Standbilder mangels Aktionsm?
